Oh, Owen Pallett.
So, I'm doing a bit of Owen Pallett research tonight (for some reason he is an artist who I listen to all the time and then feel the sudden need to know more about every few months), and I came across this at Pitchfork:
When friend and fellow violinist Patrick Wolf made plans to play the Wavelengths Series-- the weekly Toronto show that helped launch Peaches and Broken Social Scene-- Pallett threw together some songs and opened for him. Thus Final Fantasy was born.

So I knew Patrick and Owen were associated with each other, but... if that's true, then wow! Patrick can somewhat be credited with the creation of Final Fantasy. Quite nice.

I'm on this Pallett kick because I played a Beirut song on my show tonight (one I'd taken not of vaguely as I listened to the new album for the first time earlier today), noticed it was talking about a homosexual relationship, then opened the liner notes and discovered not only does Owen play on most of the songs on the new Beirut album, the one I played ("Cliquot") was both co-written AND SUNG by him. And it happens to be the nicest song on the album.
I was looking for write-ups about the song and found a lot of confusion and/or incorrect statements about the vocalist on the album. One even complimented how nice Zach Condon's voice sounded on the track, relative to how he normally sounds. *shrug* I'm so glad I got out the liner notes. They're quite literary and nice, and I learned so much from it tonight!

Here's Owen Pallet playing the song solo. Quite pretty.

I seem to be developing an obsession with this song despite not even liking Beirut that much.

I had a very nice time singing along to the new album with one of my fellow board members, today, though. If you count making oddly pitched, nonsense sounds as singing. My board hours = good times, always.

More Videos. Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear singing the same song. Owen Pallett with Beirut. )

And the song!
