So, my trip back north went as follows (biggest points are in bold, for your convenience):
Sunday:
- Winter storm is approaching! I take I-95 (I normally don't), trying staying east and avoid the mountains and maybe the worst of it.
- Get to VA, two hours into the trip; stop at a rest area. One of my brand-new tires is FLAT.
- Wait in the freezing rain for a long time for AAA; get my tire switched out for the spare.
- Drive and drive and drive. It gets dark. The weather gets really bad - snow on top of freezing rain = icy slush. I have to stop an hour south of DC because I can't deal with driving in it any more. (I meant to get past DC and Baltimore that night.)
- Settle in for the night; perfectly nice time is had.
Saturday:
- Find out the worst of the storm was the part that hit the DC area, which I would've avoided by taking my normal route. Oh, well.
- Roads are clear, it looks fine. Find good radio and head out.
- DC congested but okay. Head up I-83 to meet my normal route in PA.
- 83 is a pretty road, but not pretty enough to make up for the 3 hour traffic jam I get stuck in between York and Harrisburg. The whole interstate - north and south bound - was closed because of a big tractor trailer accident the night before. WARGH. Spend 2 hours on the interstate, another 1 on the detour. Lose, therefore, 3 hours of travel time. By the time I get back to 83, it has opened - meaning other people have been zooming past while I was stuck on gridlocked 2-lane roads.
- It gets dark. I discover my broken CD player isn't actually broken, which was really, really nice. I drive through the snow in PA listening to a mix of music meant for the summer, in NJ listening to independent radio, in NY listening to French-Canadian radio being broadcast from NYC for some reason. The snow falls and falls, but it's pretty, not bad to drive in.
- 10 miles from campus my car breaks down. ARGHHHHHHHHHH. I cry. AAA is called; a really nice highway patrol man comes and hangs out until I get towed. I get towed to my campus, my friend and the campus ride van help me get all my shit back to my room. I finally stop shaking.
- At my room I discover my dorm keys are still in my car. Go back to the car.
- The snow is beautiful, and being on campus calms me down. Life is okay, despite all the shit and the fact that they cut down the tree outside my window. I go to bed.
Yeah. So now I am without car, which is really strange. I have to figure out what to do about it.
I just found out a friend of mine is in the hospital. Which is... bad.
I just bought a bunch of my books and saw a bunch of people at the store; that was nice. I like buying books. I am really excited for this semester.
P.S. The History Boys isn't up for a single Oscar??? WTF?? Not even adapted screenplay? Argh.
